Game Rules

The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar is about to begin, and this game is all about it. You have a unique opportunity not only to watch the championship and cheer for your favorite team, but also to take part in it. Become a great player like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar or Lionel Messi, but not on the football field, but on the digital one. Moreover, you can win big if your team wins the World Championship. However, you need to play here with your head, carefully considering your game strategy. Fortunately, it is not forbidden to play with your head in football.

Start and duration of the game

The Winninja game will begin on November 20, 2022 at the same time as the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and will last until December 18, 2022, when the final game of the Championship will take place.

The essence of the game

You are trying to predict which team will win the World Cup in order to hit the big jackpot. The prize is formed from the deposits of those players who won't be lucky enough to guess the winner.

Preparing for the game

In order to take part in the game, you need to first get USDN tokens. USDN is a stablecoin of the Waves blockchain pegged to the US dollar. You will need tokens in order to buy shares in the teams that you think become the winner. You can buy USDN tokens with a bank card orexchange for another cryptocurrency that you already have. Of course, you need to have an account on the Waves blockchain. Once you have created an account, you can log in with it (please use Connect Wallet). Now you are all set, you can start playing.

Note 1. All in-game settlements (excluding Waves network transaction fees) are made in USDN stablecoin. However, the $ icon will be used on the interface instead. 1 USDN = $1.

Group Tournament

First, a little about football rules. The FIFA World Cup is held in two stages: group tournament and playoff. In the group tournament, 32 national teams are divided into 8 groups, with 4 teams in each group. At the group stage, 3 rounds will be played, after which the 2 best teams from each group will make it to the playoff. If the teams have an equal number of points in the fight for a place in the playoff, then according to the selection rules, the best team will be determined by:

  • the difference between goals scored and conceded between teams;
  • the number of goals scored;
  • the number of points in the Fair Play ranking;

You can find more information about the rules of the World Cup here. And here you can find all of FIFA's official documents downloadable in PDF format.

Now about the rules of the Winninja game. You can buy shares in any of the 32 teams.

What is Your Share in the team and how is it measured

Your Share in the team is measured as a percentage. You invest USDN in your favorite team that you think will win. Other players do the same. Then, depending on the size of your investments, your share of team ownership is calculated.

Example 1.

Player WALL-E (yes, because robots play) invested $100 in the team A. And the player Optimus Prime (also а robot) invested $250 in the team A, and the player R2D2 (robot, who else could it be) invested $800 in the same team. This means that the shares of players in the ownership of the team A will be distributed as follows:

WALL-E - 8.7%, Optimus Prime - 21.7%, R2D2 - 69.6%.

What is team capitalization

A team capitalization is the total amount of USDN that was invested in this team by all players, as well as those USDN that it received in case of a victory over other teams, minus the USDN that it lost during defeats. In example 1 above, the team A capitalization is $1,150.

What is the "share cost" in a team

At the initial stage, before the start of the group tournament, the “share cost” in any team will be the same and equal to $1 (1 USDN). Subsequently, the teams play with each other and the winning team takes part of the capitalization (in the group stage) and all of the capitalization (in the playoff) of the losing team.

Note 2. It is not possible to buy shares in a team if the team is currently playing in a match. The sale of shares in the team stops 10 minutes before the start of the match and resumes on the next day after the end of the match. Also, you cannot buy a share in a team that has dropped out of the tournament or that has not formally dropped out yet, but no longer has a chance to go to the playoff (more details).

In the group tournament in each match, the winning team takes “1/3 of the capitalization” of the losing team, thus the capitalization, as well as the “share cost” of the winning team, increases, and the capitalization and “share cost” of the losing team decreases. The score in the match in this case does not matter. At this point, the “share cost” of the winning team becomes more than $1, while that of the losing team, on the contrary, becomes less than $1.

However, “1/3 of the capitalization” is different for each of 3 rounds of the group tournament.
The first round: The winning team gets exactly 1/3 of the capitalization of the losing team.
The second round: The winning team gets from the loosing team: (1/3 of the capitalization at the 1st round) + (1/3 of USDN won in the first round (if there are any)) + (1/2 of USDN bought between the 1st and the 2nd rounds).
The third round: The winning team gets from the loosing team: (1/3 of the capitalization at the 1st round) + (1/3 of USDN won in the first round (if there are any)) + (1/2 of USDN bought between the 1st and the 2nd rounds) + (1/2 of USDN won in the second round (if there are any)) + (all USDN bought between the 2nd and the 3rd rounds).
To the playoff: Two of four teams from each group go to the playoff. So, if the two teams that have left the tournament have some capitalization left, then it goes to the two teams that made it to the playoffs in equal parts, i.e. 50/50.

Note 3. If the game ends in a draw, then the redistribution of funds does not occur.

Example 2.

Consider Team A from Example 1. Optimus Prime has 21.7% ownership of this team, which is equivalent to $250. Player Chappie (yes, it is also a robot) owns 10% ($400) of Team B, which has a capitalization of $4,000. Team A won the match against Team B. Let's see how the funds and ownership shares of the players in the teams are redistributed.

How it was
Team A $1,150
Optimus Prime share 21.7% ($250)
Team B $4,000
Chappie share 10% ($400)
How it became
Team A ($1,150 + $1,200)
Optimus Prime share 21.7% ($509)
Team B ($4,000 - $1,200)
Chappie share 10% ($280)

In other words, the players' ownership shares of the teams have not changed, but the capitalization of the teams, and, accordingly, the cost of their shares has changed. Now Optimus Prime has $509 and Chappie has $280. When your team wins, you earn. Now, if Player R2D2 wants to buy a 1% share of Team A, then he needs to spend $23.5, although before the start of this match it would have cost him $11.5.

Reduce Risk (hedge)

It's hard to predict the outcome of a match every time. Therefore, players can insure themselves and reduce risks. How it works? Consider the case of Optimus Prime and Chappie from Example 2 above.

Example 3.

As we know, Chappie lost $120 of his capital as a result of that match. Let's imagine that Chappie decided to play it safe before the match, because he was not sure of its outcome. Chappie used the Reduce Risk option to buy 10% ($128 extra) of Team A before the match started. Note that buying shares by Chappie also dilutes Optimus Prime's team ownership to 19.5% ($250). Then the redistribution of funds would be as follows:

How it was
Team A $1,278
Optimus Prime share 19.5% share ($250) Chappie share 10% ($128)
Team B $4,000
Chappie share 10% ($400)
How it became
Team A ($1,278 +$1,200)
Optimus Prime share 19.5%($483) Chappie share 10% ($275.8)
Team B ($4,000 - $1,200)
Chappie 10% share ($280)

So Chappie lost $120 on Team B but made $120 on Team A, so he didn't lose anything.

Playoff

The 2 best teams from each group advance to the playoff. The capitalization of the eliminated teams goes to the teams that made it to the playoff. The playoff consist of four stages: 1/8 final, 1/4 final, 1/2 final and final. According to the results of the semi-final, the winners will advance to the final and will fight for the championship, the losing teams will play a match for third place. From the rules of the World Cup 22, it should be noted that in the playoff, in the event of a draw, the game will go to extra time (two halves of 15 minutes each), and then, if necessary, to a penalty shootout. That is, the knockout game begins: after each match, one team leaves the tournament.

Now about the rules of the Winninja game. In the playoff in each match, the winning team takes 100% of the capitalization of the losing team, thus the capitalization, as well as the “share cost” of the winning team, increases, and the capitalization and “share cost”of the losing team becomes equal to $0. Accordingly, the cost of the player's share of ownership in the losing team also becomes equal to $0. Such a player ceases to participate in the fight for the main prize.

Selling Your Share in the team to other players

In the playoff, unlike the group tournament, players have the opportunity to trade their shares in the teams. What does this mean? A player can put his share in any team up for sale as long as it has not yet been eliminated from the tournament. Another player can buy this share because he believes in this team. Since that usually the shares are put up for sale at a discount, this is beneficial for the buying player as well. This way the selling player can exit the game without waiting for the end of the World Cup. The player creates an order to sell their share in the team, or part of their share, and indicates the amount of the discount that they are ready to provide. The player can cancel their sell order at any time. The buyer does not have to fulfill the entire order: several different players can participate in filling the same order.

Example 4.

After the game considered in the Example 2, Optimus Prime had share of 21.7% ($509) in Team A. This team is qualified for the playoff. Optimus Prime wants to sell half of his share. He places an order to sell 10.85% ($254.5) of Team A ownership at a 20% discount, meaning he sell it for $203.6. Player R2D2 buys this stake because he thinks that Team A will win.

Note 4. If a player placed an order to sell their share in a team, and then that team was eliminated from the tournament while the order was still not fulfilled, then that order is automatically canceled because the losing team's“share cost” has become $0.

Definition of a winner

Only one team will be the winner of the World Cup. Accordingly, the entire prize pool will go to the winning team. The cost of the shares of all other teams will be equal to $0. In other words, all players who own shares in this World Cup winning team will split the prize fund among themselves in proportions equivalent to their shares in this team. Good luck everyone!

Note 5. Winninja.club is a new GameFi project in the Waves ecosystem. It has just been born with the Winninja game. The platform charges a fee of 9% from the final prize fund for the services provided. The funds raised will be used for further development and future projects. Therefore, you do not just play the game, enjoy the process and have an excellent opportunity to earn money, but also participate in the development of the ecosystem and contribute to the popularization of decentralized solutions.
